Scoops & Wickets to raise funds for Brook Lane gym

June 13, 2008|By MARLO BARNHART

LEITERSBURG - Money raised from this weekend's Scoops & Wickets event at Brook Lane will be earmarked for a gymnasium on the campus.

"We have space for gym activities now, but they are split between two small sites," said Curt Miller, spokesman for the hospital complex.

In the barn, there is a small gymnasium in a recreational area, Miller said. There are mats and one basketball hoop for limited sports activities.

In the lower level of the Laurel Hall school building, a large space is available for indoor sports when the weather is bad.

"But we have had to carve some of that space up for classrooms," Miller said.

Plans for a large, freestanding gymnasium will hinge on how much money can be raised through events such as the Wicket Affair and auction this weekend, Miller said.

The project has a projected price tag of $2 million, and Miller said most of the funds will need to be secured before any construction can begin.

"We have an eye toward making this building available for community use, too," Miller said.

Today's Scoops & Wickets event will include an ice cream social from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will include children's games, a petting zoo, a clown making balloon sculptures, croquet and boccie ball tournaments, a special challenge croquet course and an auction.

Admission cost of $2 includes all activities. Admission is free with a sponsorship ticket.

Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Those younger than 5 do not require a ticket.
