Secret gardens

June 12, 2008|By JULIE E. GREENE

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Garden lovers can legitimately sneak peeks at some private gardens in Shepherdstown's downtown area this weekend during the Back Alley Garden Tour & Tea.

The self-guided tour features 14 private gardens and five public gardens. There's a tea and display of local artists' work both days at the War Memorial Building. The tea includes floral teas, finger food, desserts and fresh strawberries.

The Shepherdstown Men's Club is sponsoring the event, with proceeds benefiting Morgan's Grove Park, War Memorial Building and Shepherdstown Day Care Center. The day care center's share will fund landscaping and start a garden, said Elizabeth Kyle, event chairwoman.
