'Claws crack Suns early to salvage win

June 12, 2008

Dennis Winn homered and Karl Bolt drove in two runs with ground balls on Wednesday as Lakewood defeated Hagerstown 7-3 to salvage the final game of a four-game series and keep its slim first-half hopes alive.

The BlueClaws are in fourth place, four games back in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division with four games to play. The Suns, who were eliminated earlier in the week, took on the role of spoiler with relish.

But Lakewood took care of business early, scoring in four of the first five innings against Hagerstown starter Jeff Smoker (0-3) to take control of the game.

Winn homered with one out in the fourth inning and Bolt drove in runs with ground balls in the third and fifth innings to help Lakewood build a 5-0 lead.

The Suns managed to score a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to draw within 5-3.

Aaron Seuss ripped an RBI single in the sixth to get Hagerstown on the board. Boomer Whiting hit a two-run double to left in the seventh to get the Suns within two runs.

Lakewood scored two runs off reliever Ryan Philabaum in the eighth.

Smoker lasted four innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Lakewood starter Julian Sampson allowed one run in six innings.
