The Humane Society of Washington County recently held its fifth annual volunteer appreciation dinner at the American Legion on Northern Avenue in Hagerstown.
Paul Miller, executive director of the shelter, opened the evening with a brief history of the program, which formally began in April 2003 with 26 volunteers. During the last 12-month period volunteers completed more than 9,000 hours in such areas as the Pet Food Bank, animal care, customer service, off-site adoptions, special events, admin support and maintenance. There are 167 active volunteers helping at the shelter on a regular basis.
Recognized for their contributions were Bill and Marie Wampler who completed 3,214 hours organizing and supporting the Pet Food Bank and Callista Lohman who completed 1,053 hours in administrative support and cat care.
All volunteers in attendance received a certificate acknowledging their total number of volunteer hours and a gift item donated to the shelter by the Lenox Distribution Center in Williamsport.
