Westbound traffic on Interstate 70 is backed up, beginning at the Md. 63 interchange west of Hagerstown, due to highway paving, a Maryland State Highway Adminstration spokesman said.
At about 3:15 p.m., the backup reached as far east as Md. 65, Maryland State Police said.
The backup is due to the closure of the left lane of westbound I-70 on the bridge over Md. 63, which has been repaved but is still cooling, SHA spokesman Chuck Gischlar said.
Highway officials expect to have the lane reopen by 4:15 p.m., Gischlar said.
"We're sorry for the inconvenience, but it is to improve the ride quality," Gischlar said. "We appreciate the motorists' patience."
