June 11, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A bridge over Interstate 81 near City Hospital in Martinsburg will be named in honor of longtime physician C. Vincent Townsend Sr. on June 20 as part of a ceremony on West Virginia Day.

The ceremony honoring Townsend, 85, of Martinsburg, will be held in the Erma Byrd Center auditorium at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center, Eastern Division, on the hospital's campus, according to a news release from Teresa E. McCabe, vice president of marketing and development for WVU Hospitals-East.

State Sens. John Unger, D-Berkeley, and Ron Stollings, D-Boone, are expected to take part in the event that is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., McCabe said.

The naming of the exit 14 interstate bridge as the Dr. C. Vincent Townsend Sr. Bridge was made possible through the state Legislature's adoption of Senate Concurrent Resolution 18 in March.
