Baseball players make the big time

BHS graduates Craig Haupt (Class of 2007) and Matthew Byers (Class of 2006) are members of the Hagerstown Community College baseball team that recently went all the way to the final four of the National Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

In addition to a historical third-place finish, the Hawks also won the series' sportsmanship award. This accomplishment caps a season of record-breaking wins (42), the Region XX championship, and the Eastern District championship.

Hawks Coach Scott Jennings was named coach of the year at the district and regional levels, and the team won this year's Athletic Director's Award at HCC. This award is given each year to the sports program best representing the college on and off the field, including GPA, attendance, sportsmanship and overall program quality.

Our Boonsboro guys can be proud of this achievement. Moving forward, Haupt will return for a second year at HCC and Matthew will transfer to Salisbury, Md., to continue his education.
