Rooney lifts Suns past Lakewood

June 10, 2008

Sean Rooney's two-out, three-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Hagerstown Suns to a 6-3 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws in the opener of their three-game series Monday night at Municipal Stadium.

With the game tied 3-3, Bill Rhinehart led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to center field off Lakewood reliever Ben Pfinsgraff (1-3).

With one out, Michael Burgess and Stephen King drew consecutive walks to load the bases for Tim Pahuta, who popped out to set the stage for Rooney.

Down 2-0, the Suns (30-32) got on the board in the fourth on Aaron Seuss' sacrifice fly.

They scored two runs in the sixth to go up 3-2 on Bill Rhinehart's RBI groundout and Burgess' RBI double.

While Suns reliever Edulin Abreu (2-0) gave up a run in the top of the eighth for his first blown save of the season, he escaped a bases-loaded jam to pick up his second win.

Rooney went 3-for-4 for the game to raise his batting average to .343. Brandon Whiting had two of Hagerstown's 10 hits.

Michael Taylor and Matthew Rizzotti each had three of Lakewood's nine hits.

The Suns host the BlueClaws (35-28) at 6:35 p.m. each of the next two nights.
