James R. Powell, 73

MAY 15, 1935-JUNE 7, 2008

James Richard "Jim" Powell, 73, of 17325 Cloverleaf Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at his home.

Born May 15, 1935, in New Brighton, Pa., he was the son of the late Elmer C. Powell Sr. and Thelma Ball Powell.

He retired in 1996 from Mack Trucks Inc. after 33 years.

He was a member of Golden Bull Dogs, UAW Local 171, Interstate Coin Club, Williamsport Red Men, Conococheague Tribe 84 and Pittsburgh Steelers Fan Club of Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce A. Powell; three daughters, Jennifer Hykes of Middletown, Md., JoAnn Kreit of Hagerstown and Judith Nalley of Boonsboro; two sons, Jay Powell of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jon-Patrick Powell of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Cutchall of Hagerstown and Linda Waling of Accokeek, Md.; nine sisters, Ruth Goehring and Jean Eichler, both of East Palestine, Ohio, Rose Deitrich of Beaver, Pa., Beaulah Brown of Beaver Falls, Pa., Clara Deemer of Zelienople, Pa., Alice Rambo of Galion, Ohio, Naomi Rodgers of Intercession, Fla., Janet Tatro of Crestview, Fla., and Mary Ann Waire of Haines City, Fla.; five brothers, Samuel Powell and Elmer Powell, both of New Brighton, Ralph Powell of Hagerstown, Charles Powell of Red Oaks, Iowa, and Ronald Powell of New Galilee, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.


Memorial services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Rebecca J.P. Hoover will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Linda Charlotte Chaney, 63

SEPT. 6, 1944-JUNE 7, 2008

Linda Charlotte "Toe Joe" Chaney, 63, of 427 Jefferson St., Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at her home.

Born Sept. 6, 1944, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Melvin and Bertha Mae Snyder Dayhoff.

She was a member of the Evangel Baptist Church.

She was an avid duckpin bowler from 1983 to 2007. She bowled in the Long Meadow Women's Triples League, where she was the statistician from 1990 to 2005 and served on the Board of Directors, Long Meadow Women's Major League and the Long Meadow Thrifty Thirty League. She also was a member of the Tri-State Bowling Association, where she served as First Vice President from 1989 to 2007, and on the Standing Committee from 1982 to 1988. She helped at the National Duckpin Tournaments. She was in the Top 20 Women Bowlers in the Tri-State Area.

She was a member of the AARP.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Chaney; one daughter, Bobbi Lin and husband, Bob, of Hagerstown; two brothers, Clarence (Skunk) Dayhoff Sr. and wife, Freda, and Richard (Groundhog) Dayhoff, both of Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Maelin of Hagerstown; and nieces, nephews and close friends.

She was preceded in death by one sister in-law, Doris Dayhoff, and one niece, Sue Ellen Dayhoff.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Evangel Baptist Church, 17922 Broadfording Road, Hagerstown. Pastor Ronald K. Faith will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

Hylda A. Everts, 88

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Hylda A. Sipes Everts, 88, of 3303 Sportsman Road, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at her home.

Born Jan. 12, 1920, in Cove Gap, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ernest L. and Esther Kuhn Sipes.

Her husband, Merle G. Everts, died Nov. 10, 2006. They were married Dec. 25, 1937.

She last worked at the former Ross Garment Co. of Hagerstown.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle.

She played the bass fiddle with her husband's music group, the Hilltop Harmonizers.

She is survived by three daughters, L. Faye Mentzer, Linda M. Murray and Juanita K. Everts, all of Greencastle; one sister, Lou S. Ramsey of McConnellsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Clarence J. Sipes of Olive Branch, Miss., and Ralph E. Sipes of Lemasters, Pa.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Melva Hillis, Hazel Kelchner, Beulah Jones and Mabel Jones; and two brothers, Ralph L. Sipes and Lawrence Sipes.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle. The Rev. Martin H. Horn will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
