Weather causes outages and road closings

June 05, 2008

More than 11,000 customers in the Tri-State area were without power as of 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday after a rain storm coupled with heavy winds tore through the region earlier this afternoon, said Janice Lantz, a spokeswoman for Allegheny Power.

Lantz said the following areas were hit the hardest:

Washington County, 3,100 customers

Martinsburg, W.Va., 3,600 customers

Frederick County, 4,500 customers

Other areas in the Tri-State area suffered a few hundred power outages at the most, she said.

Crews from Allegheny Power will be working throughout the night to restore power to the customers who were affected by the storm, Lantz said. Although a majority of the power should be restored this evening, the problem won't be completely addressed until Thursday morning.

The Washington County Highway Department reported that two roads were closed as of 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

The roads that were closed are listed below:

King Road between Md. 34 and Md. 67

Red Hill Road between Dogstreet and Porterstown roads

The highway department did not know when the roadways would reopen.
