Smithsburg EMS reports activity

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 18 motor vehicle, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents in the month of May, among a total of 99 calls for the month.

During May, 25 calls were within Smithsburg town limits and 14 calls were in the Leitersburg area. There were four calls to the Mount Aetna area and another six in Cascade and Pen Mar.

Mutual-aid calls included seven to Frederick County and three to Franklin County, Pa. An additional 11 calls were in the Hagerstown area and five calls were in the Boonsboro area.

SEMS personnel took 63 patients to area hospitals during the month, including one patient who was treated and flown to Washington County Hospital by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter.

The 99 calls for the month include several transfers that SEMS staff handled during May, including one to Hagerstown's Community Rescue Service (CRS) while their personnel attended a funeral.

Two other transfers were to Shafer Park in Boonsboro to handle calls during the Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue Co. carnival.

Unscheduled transfers included one each to CRS and to Sharpsburg Area Emergency Medical Services while those areas of the county experienced increased call volume.
