Boonsboro Town Council bans skateboards, scooters from downtown

June 04, 2008

BOONSBORO - The Boonsboro Town Council voted 4-2 Monday to approve an ordinance banning skateboards, scooters, skates and rollerblades from the downtown district and restricting bicycles from riding on downtown district sidewalks.

Councilmembers Mervin F. "Frank" Nuice and Barbara B. Wetzel voted against the ordinance.

Nuice, who previously argued the ordinance was too restrictive, said it would not solve the town's issues with rowdy children and teenagers.

A group of skateboarders and BMX bikers gathered in the town's Shafer Park had not heard about the ordinance, but said they were not surprised to hear about it after Williamsport and Sharpsburg enacted similar bans.

Caleb Schildtknecht, 18, of Sharpsburg, said he thought the ordinance would be hard to enforce.

"The cops are probably going to have trouble," he said. "They can't control it."

The downtown district consists of North Main and South Main streets from the square at Potomac and St. Paul streets through the 200 blocks of North Main and South Main streets, and the first blocks of Potomac and St. Paul streets, according to the proposed ordinance.
