Suns don't waste an extra chance

June 04, 2008

LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- Lakewood gave Hagerstown an extra out in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday night, and the Suns made them pay for it in their 5-3 victory over the BlueClaws.

With the game tied 3-3 with two outs and a runner on first, Michael Burgess struck out swinging against Joseph Rocchio (2-6). But the pitch was wild, allowing Burgess to reach.

Sean Rooney followed with a two-run double to left to put the Suns in front.

Down 2-0, Hagerstown (28-29) got on the board with a run in the second. Burgess doubled, Rooney hit a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error on the play allowed Burgess to score.

Trailing 3-1, the Suns tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Tim Pahuta's RBI double made it 3-2 and Rooney singled and eventually scored on an error to even the score.

Daniel Lyons, Pahuta and Rooney each had two of the Suns' nine hits.

Hagerstown starter Bradley Meyers allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six in five innings.

Erik Arnesen (5-1) relieved Meyers and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. After Dan Leatherman shut out the BlueClaws (32-26) for 1 2/3, Edulin Abreu worked the ninth for his fourth save.
