LEGION BASEBALL



FUNKSTOWN - Aaron Hershberger hit the game-winning three-run home run in the seventh inning to lift the Williamsport Nationals past Funkstown 8-5 on Tuesday.

Nick Bodnar had two hits and two RBIs, while Travis Sluger and Eli Beard each had two hits for Williamsport (3-0).

Marcellus Sumlin had three hits for Funkstown in its season opener.

Kellinger an All-American

Frederick Community College sophomore Tim Kellinger, a 2005 St. Maria Goretti graduate, has been honored as an NJCAA Division II First Team All-American.

Kellinger, a shortstop, led the Maryland JuCo Conference in home runs (13) and RBIs (76, second nationally and a school record) while hitting .438 for the season.

Shepherd announces staff changes

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University head coach Monte Cater announced several changes to the Shepherd football staff.

Jeremy Overfelt joins the Rams coaching staff after serving as a defensive backs/strength and conditioning assistant at Marietta College last season. Overfelt will coach outside linebackers and run the strength and conditioning program.

Sam Williams, a defensive assistant for the Rams last season, has been elevated to the quarterbacks coach position. Williams replaces Joel Gordon, who resigned to take a similar position with Emory & Henry College.

Jesse Correll, a standout wide receiver for the Rams from 2000 to 2004, will coach the receivers.

Josh Kline will coach the defensive line and special teams while serving as recruiting coordinator.

Volleyball coaching clinic

The Tri-State FCA Volleyball Club will host a coaching clinic on July 30 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Grace Academy. The clinic will feature former University of Maryland head coach Janice Kruger and Williamsport graduate Kelli Myers, the former University of Connecticut head coach. The clinic is open to all club, middle school, high school or aspiring coaches. Cost is $50 per coach. For more information, call 301-733-7277.

Summer volleyball camp

The Tri-State FCA Volleyball Club will host the High Performance Summer Volleyball Camp from July 30 to Aug. 1 at Grace Academy from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The camp will be run by former University of Maryland head coach Janice Kruger and Williamsport graduate Kelli Myers, the former University of Connecticut head coach. The camp is limited to 32 experienced players who play club and/or school volleyball from the 12U level up. Cost is $150 per player. For more information, call 301-733-7277.
