Smithsburg house damaged by garage fire

June 03, 2008|By HEATHER KEELS

SMITHSBURG - A two-story house in Whispering Hills was severely damaged in a Monday afternoon fire, Smithsburg fire officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze that was reported at about 4 p.m., but the garage and the story above the garage at 100 Rachel's Court sustained severe fire damage, according to Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co. Assistant Chief Chuck Johnson.

The rest of the house sustained extensive smoke damage and the neighboring house was damaged slightly by the heat, Johnson said.

The fire started in the garage area and spread to the roof, causing the floor above the garage to collapse, he said.

The house is owned by Kristin and Jim Van Camp. Three of the family's four children were home when the fire broke out. All occupants got out safely, but the family's two cats were missing Monday evening, Kristin Van Camp said.

The residents plan to stay with family, she said.
