A Smithsburg man charged Thursday with negligent manslaughter by automobile was ordered held without bond Friday morning by a Washington County District Court judge.

Harry William "Billy" Shrader Jr., 45, of 12435 Pleasant Valley Road in Smithsburg, is charged in an accident Sunday on Md. 77 that killed Debra Reed Fields-Jordan, 35, of Boonsboro.

Shrader was being held Friday night at the Washington County Detention Center, a deputy said.

Fields-Jordan was eastbound on Md. 77 on a motorcycle Sunday at 6:54 p.m. when a white pickup truck traveling south on Pleasant Valley Road ran a stop sign at the intersection with Md. 77, police have said.

Fields-Jordan's motorcycle, which had the right of way, struck the pickup truck on the passenger side. The truck struck a tree south of the intersection and the driver fled on foot, police said.

The front of Fields-Jordan's motorcycle was destroyed, according to court documents.

When officers arrived at the scene of the accident, the white pickup truck involved in the crash was south of the accident and the driver had fled on foot, according to court records.

Shrader also has been charged with failure to immediately stop at the scene of an accident involving death, failure of driver involved in accident to render reasonable assistance to injured person, driving a motor vehicle on a revoked license, reckless driving, negligent driving, failure to stop at a stop sign and unauthorized display and use of a registration plate, according to court records.

Shrader was arrested Thursday at his attorney's office.

He is scheduled to appear Aug. 7 in District Court.
