May 30, 2008

Authorities on Friday were investigating the death of a female who was found face down in a backyard swimming pool in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Also, emergency workers responded Friday afternoon to a possible drowning in southern Washington County near Lock 34 of the C&O Canal, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

Officials said foul play was not suspected in the drowning in Martinsburg, but the victim's body was sent to Charleston, W.Va., for an autopsy at the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The victim, who was not identified by police, was found at 900 Hillcrest Drive, where emergency responders pronounced her dead at 11:37 a.m., Berkeley County Medical Examiner Donald Shirley said.

The Martinsburg police and fire departments also responded to the home.

In the Washington County incident, a man was taken out of the water and rescue workers performed CPR on him as he was taken by ambulance to Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital around 4:30 p.m., a dispatcher said.

Units from Washington County, Frederick County, Md., and Jefferson County, W.Va., responded to the scene.

No additional information was available Friday night.
