CLEAR SPRING -- It might have been 14 years ago, but Laura Luhouse said she can remember it like it was yesterday.

She was a fourth-grader attending a week of drama camp at the College for Kids at what was then Hagerstown Junior College.

"On the Friday of that week, we put on a play and our families came to see it," Luhouse recalled. "It was great."

Luhouse, 23, a first-grade teacher at Clear Spring Elementary School, is coming full circle this summer as she returns to the College for Kids as an instructor.

"I'm really excited," Luhouse said.

Two colleagues with whom she worked last year at Williamsport Elementary School mentioned to Luhouse that she should look into teaching at the College for Kids.

"I e-mailed Anne Myers and told her I had been a student there when I was 9 years old," Luhouse said.

Myers, the program manager for HCC's Lifelong Learning, said there are classes for children from first grade through 10th grade each summer at the College for Kids.

"I'm going to be teaching 'Books and Bytes,' which is about reading, mixed with computer learning," Luhouse said. "There will be fun and hands-on activities."

There are also classes where kids collect and examine microscopic organisms, make hand puppets, learn about farm animals, do fun math projects, make crafts and become amateur sleuths.

Luhouse attended Maugansville Elementary School and Clear Spring middle and high schools. She graduated from Frostburg State University after studying elementary education and early childhood education.

Although the 14th annual College for Kids is still weeks away, there have been meetings and preparations.

"The numbers are up, I hear," she said. "I am so excited to be coming back."

Classes begin about two weeks after school ends for the year.

"The classes are a week each and I am doing two different weeks, one in June and one in July," Luhouse said.

Luhouse said she will be busy this summer as ground is broken on a home in Big Pool that she and her future husband are building.
