Dick's Market owner beaten, robbed

The 70-year-old owner of a Hagerstown market was beaten and robbed by two men on his way to work Thursday, Hagerstown Police said in a news release Tuesday.

Richard James Johnston, owner of Dick's Market at 895 Salem Ave., was walking in the 300 block of Bryan Place at about 5:30 a.m., when two men knocked him to the ground, beat him and robbed him, police said.

Johnston suffered a broken jaw, a broken nose and cuts to his face that required stitches and a short stay in the hospital, police said.

Police are offering a cash reward of $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the assailants, according to the news release. Anyone with information may contact the Hagerstown Police Department at 301-790-3700, ext. 234, or e-mail the information to crimetip@hagerstownpd.org.
