Camp seeks students interested in natural resources

May 27, 2008

High school students with an interest in natural resources are encouraged to apply now for the July 20-26 Natural Resources Careers Conference at the Hickory Environmental Center in Garrett County.

The Washington County Forestry Board encourages any local high school student with an interest in natural resources to apply. Each county is able to sponsor as many as two students with a scholarship to attend the conference at no cost.

Student spaces are limited, and the deadline for applications is near. For more information and to download an application, visit the Washington County Forestry Board Web site at www.wcfb.sailorsite.net.

The week combines classroom and field activities to create an extensive and relevant curriculum developed by natural resources professionals and volunteers.

Tree identification, forest ecology, reforestation, forest measurements, land use and planning for natural resources, soil and water conservation, wildlife habitat improvement, GIS and GPS technology, urban forestry and fisheries management are covered.

There are field trips that explore a paper mill and state parks, and there is a college night where students can talk to representatives from natural resources programs from several colleges and universities.
