Virginia Mae "Ginny" Smith, 86

MAY 21, 1922-MAY 25, 2008

Virginia Mae "Ginny" Smith, 86, formerly of 559 Jefferson St., Hagerstown, passed away while in the company of family members, Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center in Hagerstown.

Born on May 21, 1922, in Fort Loudon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Benton and Catherine Anna (Brindle) Keefer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Clinton Smith Sr.

She retired from Fairchild Aircraft.

Ginny had been a member of Elks Lodge No. 378 and Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 Ladies Auxillary.

Virginia is survived by her loving family, daughters, Sharon Lee Hammond of Williamsport, and Charlene Kay Gamewell and husband, Tomme, of Salisbury, N.C.; brothers, Dean Kieffer and Donnie Keefer, both of Mercersburg, Pa.; sisters, Marlene Beeler of Chambersburg, Audrey Pfeiffer of Hagerstown and Roberta Keefer of Fort Loudon; grandaughters, Stacy Alexander and husband, Pete, and Kelly Stine and husband, Mike; grandsons, Donovan Hammond Jr. and wife, Audrey, Clinton Grams and wife, Ashley, and Cole Grams and wife, Jenny; stepgrandaughter, Natalie Teal and husband, David; great-grandaughter, Grace Elizabeth Grams; great-grandsons, Donovan Dayton Hammond and Cole Grams Jr.; stepgreat-grandaughters, Lindsay Stine and Hannah Stine; and stepgreat-grandsons, Tyler Stine and Chandler Teal.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John Clinton Smith Jr.; son-in-law, Donovan Hammond Sr. in 2007; and brothers Warren and Richard Keefer.

Funeral services will be held at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Loyal Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elwood Christian Jefferies, 85

SALEM, Va. - Elwood Christian (Jeff) Jefferies, 85, of 1558 Innsbrooke Drive, Salem, Va., (formerly of Hagerstown, Md.) went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 24, 2008.

Born June 6, 1922, in Buena Vista, Va., he was the son of the late Ernest Christian and Emma Yeago Jefferies. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Charles Jefferies.

While in Hagerstown, he was the former owner of the Red Horse Steak House. He served a term on the Washington County Economic Development Commission, was a member of the Hagerstown Kiawanis Club and was a member of Paramount Baptist Church. In Salem, he was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Jefferies was a long-standing Mason and Shriner of 50 years in the King Lodge 461 of Bristol, Tenn.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Barbara Ann Darnell Jefferies; children, Barbara Glenn, Ellen King, Chris and wife, Mary Fran Jefferies, and Mark Jefferies. He was blessed with nine grandchildren, Angella Clemons and husband, Dean, Tiffeny McDermott, April Norman and husband, Andy, Tonya Atkins and husband, Craig, Beth, Becky and Thomas Jefferies, Mark Jefferies Jr. and wife, Margaret, and Jason Jefferies. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren, Shane Herring, Lynndsey Kennedy, Grant and Matthew Clemons, Tyler Norman, Caleb and Mary Grace Atkins, Emily Jefferies, and Alisia and Mikala Jefferies; one great-great-grandchild, Kylie Heffing; two brothers, William Jefferies and wife, Katherine, and James Jefferies and wife, Frances; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Roanoke Rescue Mission, 410 4th St., Roanoke, VA 24013.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke. Interment will be private.

Janice Z. Poole

AUG. 2, 1929-MAY 24, 2008

Janice Z. Poole, of Hagerstown, passed away May 24, 2008, of cancer at her home.

She was born Aug. 2, 1929, at Washington County Hospital to John Herman Zaiser and Genevieve Downin Zaiser.

Janice graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1948 and from Western Maryland College in 1952.

Following graduation, she married her longtime sweetheart, David K. Poole Jr. Their marriage of 52 years was a happy one, filled with love, respect, good companionship and many shared friends.

She taught elementary education in Baltimore and at the Surrey School in Hagerstown between the years of 1952 and 1956, and then retired to raise her children and become a full-time homemaker.
