May 26, 2008

A team from Greenbrier Elementary School finished first for elementary schools in the Western Region Stock Market games.

The three students - Angelica Wilbar, Jeffery Bennett and Zackery El-Mohandes - were recognized at an awards presentation hosted by Citi Hagerstown on May 14.

The group started with a simulated $100,000 and ended with $110,675.17 after 10 weeks.

The stocks they invested in that showed a gain were First Solar, Flowserve and Petrohawk Energy.

The program is sponsored by the Maryland Council on Economic Education, with a goal of educating students to become lifelong informed decision-makers as investors and consumers.

Williamsport High School and West Frederick Middle School were first in their categories.

A team from Greenbrier also won first place for elementary schools for the state of Maryland for the fall session.

Its portfolio grew to $127,000 in 10 weeks. The team included Zackery El-Mohandes, Jeffery Bennett, Jacob Fishkin and Brandon Potter.
