Quarter horse show

The makeup date for the Maryland State Quarter Horse Youth Schooling Horse Show is May 31.

The show will start at 9 a.m., with Marjorie Thor Straten conducting the free clinic around 11 a.m. Scott Kauffman is the judge. Door prizes will be given out.


Classes are offered for all ages and levels of riding and cost $6 each.

The show will be in honor of three brave women in the Maryland Quarter Horse Association who have fought or are fighting breast cancer. Rhonda Replogle and Eileen Simpson are survivors, and Sandy Brewer is undergoing treatment. Donations will be accepted for Relay to Life for cancer awareness and cure.

Legion Auxiliary

Morris Frock Auxiliary Unit 42, The American Legion, will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, June 3, at the post home at 405 Northern Ave. Each member should bring a dish to share. The covered-dish meal will be served at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting beginning at 7 p.m.

The program will include election of officers for the 2008-09 administrative year.

During the summer, please contact Unit Chaplain Dorothy Smith with the names of ill or deceased members.

DIRT yard sale

Join DIRT (Disciples in Relief of Tragedy) on Saturday in the parking lot of First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. DIRT is sponsoring a yard sale to raise money for its second and final trip to Gulfport, Miss., June 14 to 22 and for possible local projects.

Reserve your space today. A space and two tables can be purchased for $15, a space without tables is $10 and extra tables are available for $5 each.

Sandwiches, baked goods and beverages will be sold.

The youth of the church will be sponsoring a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

North High Band

The North Hagerstown High School Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band participated in the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester, Va. The Wind Ensemble took first place for the second year in a row!

The following band members received awards at the year-end awards banquet May 16: North High Band Service Award: Ned Lucas and Christina Oliver; Director's Award: Meagan Graff; Marine Corps Youth Foundation Musicianship Award: Josh Rogers; Band Alumni Memorial Scholarship: Evan Gist; Louis Armstrong Jazz Musicianship Award: Maggie Shorb; John Phillip Sousa Musicianship Award: Ethan Jones.

St. Maria Goretti

There will be a school book buyback on Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m.

The school mission trip to Greensburg, Pa., through the Catholic Heart Work Camp will be June 22 to 28. Contact the school for more details.

Lioness Club

The Hagerstown Lioness Club will meet Thursday, June 5, at Cortland Mansion, 19411 Cortland Drive, Hagerstown. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. District 22-W Past District Gov. David Fisher will install the club's officers for 2008-09. All guest reservations and all cancellations must be made no later than Sunday evening, June 1, by calling the attendance chair at 301-790-0913.

TOPS 446

TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 had a sharing talk time, at its May 21 meeting. The chapter enjoys helping others.

Members plan to talk on "Mind on Media" at the Wednesday meeting. Visitors are welcome. The group meets each Wednesday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 19731 Shiloh Church Road, Hagerstown, at 8:30 a.m. for walking. Weigh-in is at 9 a.m. and the meeting is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

AARP Chapter 623

Chapter 623 will hold its annual picnic Tuesday, June 10, at noon at Next Dimensions on Old National Pike.

It is a tradition that members play bingo following the meal. Each attending member is asked to bring at least one bingo prize. The prize should be of $1 value and wrapped. Picnic tickets are $13 each and can be obtained from Carrie Powell at 301-824-6120. The last day to obtain tickets is June 4. Come and bring a friend. It will be held indoors, rain or shine!


On June 2, the chapter will hold a graduation from TOPS to KOPS for Eileene Mason.

At last week's meeting, Gordana Ritchie received the award for the "Got r done" contest. Donna Blackowitz presented the program, "Cooking for One or Two."
