Wildcats girls win the Maryland Class 1A Track & Track Field Championship

BALTIMORE - After a one-year absence, Williamsport High School brought the girls Maryland Class 1A Track & Field Championship back to Washington County.

Cayla Broadwater placed first in the final event of the day - the high jump - to lift the Wildcats to a 66-64 victory over Western Tech to win the team competition Saturday at Morgan State University.

It's the second team title in three years for Williamsport, which also won in 2006, and gave Washington County its 12th girls 1A title in 13 years.

Boonsboro won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005, while Smithsburg won eight straight titles from 1996 to 2003.

Broadwater cleared 5 feet 7 1/4 inches to win the high jump, her third win of the championships. She also won the long jump with a mark of 17 feet 7 1/2 inches.

Broadwater won the triple jump Thursday.

Other Washington County winners were:

·Jess Palmer, Morgan Keplinger, Brittany Weaver and Amy Taylor of Williamsport won the Class 1A girls 4x400 meter relay in 4 minutes, 5.19 seconds.

· Scott Rice of Boonsboro won the Class 1A boys pole vault, clearing 13-10.

· Michael Lilley of Williamsport won the Class 1A boys 1,600-meter run in 4:26.33.

· Justin Bowie of Williamsport won the Class 1A boys 110 hurdles in 15.36 seconds.
