Walter S. Swartz Jr., 83



AUG. 12, 1924-MAY 21, 2008

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Walter S. "Sonny" Swartz Jr., 83, of 401 Sunny Drive, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at his home.

Born Aug. 12, 1924, in Curtisville, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter S. Swartz Sr. and Delta H. Seabolt Swartz.

He was a 1941 graduate of Vocational School in New Kensington. He attended New York Technical Electronics School in Pittsburgh.

He became a supervisor in maintenance for Pittsburgh Plate and Glass Industry in Greensburg, Pa., then in Carlisle, Pa., and then was transferred to Texas. Prior to retiring in 1984, he was transferred back to Greensburg. He retired after 30 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He attended Calvary Assembly of God Church in Waynesboro.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 of Waynesboro and National AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Mae Cutlip Swartz, whom he married Sept. 6, 1946; two sons, Walter J. Swartz III of Waynesboro, and William C. Swartz of Greensburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Helena Hartman.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home; Waynesboro. The Rev. Dwan N. Newsome will officiate.

Burial will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Greenwood Memorial Park, New Kensington, Pa.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clifford J. Rice



DEC. 10, 1935-MAY 21, 2008

Clifford J. Rice died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Cliff was born Dec. 10, 1935, at the family home in Leitersburg, Md. He was the son of Clifford and Ethel Good Rice, and was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, class of 1954.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, whom he married July 20, 1979; his three sons, Thomas J. Rice and his wife, Debbie, of Hagerstown, Md., Rodney L. Rice and his wife, Lorie, of Bremerton, Wash., and Jeffrey E. Rice and his wife, Mercy, of Homestead, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; also four brothers, Richard Rice of Baltimore, Md., Max Rice of Pickerington, Ohio, and Donald Rice and Lynn Rice, both of Hagerstown; and two sisters; Louella Eckstine of Hagerstown, and Jane Franek of Ephrata, Pa.

Retirement began in 2001 from the Hagerstown Post Office after 43 years of service.

As a young adult, he was active in the 4-H Fast Pitch Softball League, and later served as president of Superior Little League. He managed teams in Valley Little League and Smithsburg Little Sluggers. For many years, he was part of the Washington County Church Softball League, then became an active manager and player in the Washington County Senior Softball and later served as a manager and player in the Montgomery County Senior Recreation Leagues.

Cliff served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, deacon and trustee and served on various church committees. He had a heart for missions and was pleased to serve on short-term missions with J.A.R.R.S., a division of Wycliffe Bible Translators as well as Teen Missions. He also traveled to Mexico to assist in building projects with the church. He was a member of Life House Church Bethel in Hagerstown at the time of his death.

Services will be Saturday, May 24, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, with Pastor Joseph M. Quesenberry officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 23, 2008, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Private interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Donald L. Moser, 75

Donald Lee Moser, 75, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 11, 1932, in Mount Lena, he was the son of the late Russell Lewis and Agnes Lucinda Younkins Moser.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gertrude Russell Moser, in 1998.

He was a 1951 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

He retired from Columbo Yogurt in Hagerstown.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He had been a projectionist at area theaters.

He is survived by one sister, Dolores L. Kline of Boonsboro; one brother, Gerald L. Moser of Boonsboro; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. Pastor Rodney Rhodes will officiate.

It was his request to have no visitation.
