NEWVILLE, Pa. -- Katie Zak scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 14th inning as Waynesboro beat Carlisle 2-1 Thursday in the opening round of the PIAA District 3-AAAA tournament at the Heishman Softball Complex.
Zak started the inning with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by Mallory Wishard. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, which led to an intentional walk of Amanda Gray to load the bases and set up Zak's winning run.
Taryn Ashway held Carlisle to three hits, striking out 22 and walking four. Zak finished with three hits and Gray had two for the Maidens (21-2).
Waynesboro will play Central Dauphin today at either the Heishman Complex or Brightbill Park in Harrisburg.
