Three cars catch fire at Bolivar salvage yard

May 22, 2008

BOLIVAR, W.Va. - About three cars caught fire Wednesday afternoon at Courtney & Son Auto Parts & Wrecker Service on Polk Street, according to a fire official.

It was unclear what started the fire, said Capt. Donnie Dunn of the Friendship Fire Company in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Firefighters had the fire, which was reported at 2:33 p.m., under control in about 40 minutes, Dunn said.

A state Department of Environmental Protection official responded to the scene in case any gas seeped into the ground or flowed from the scene as water was being used to extinguish the fire, Dunn said.

Fires have occurred at the business before.

In June 1999, hundreds of cars burned at the salvage yard after a car caught fire while it was being moved, fire officials said.

Later that year in September, eight cars burned.
