Dance students to showcase talents Saturday at Maryland Theatre

May 20, 2008

Dance students, under the direction of Ranelle Flurie, will showcase their talents at The Maryland Theatre on Saturday with two performances.

The 2 p.m. show will feature the younger students ages 3 to 10. The youngest group is fondly referred to as "baby ballerinas." The ballet section continues with the next age group of 4- and 5-year-olds or "Sweet Remembrances" leading up to the elementary-aged children dancing "Children's Games."

The jazz dancers will perform to excerpts from musicals such as "Grease," "Hairspray" and "High School Musical 2" with the tap dancers sounding "Fabulously Fierce." A modern piece titled "Broken Boundaries" opens both shows. Concluding the matinee program are 10 graduating seniors who choreograph their dances in their own style.

The 7 p.m. shows runs like a true performance with the intermediate to advanced dancers leading the way. Following the modern piece, then more jazz and tap, the hip-hop section shakes up the audience. Interesting and always original, the pointe ballet with music by Stravinsky premiere's "Forces of Nature." Ending on an upbeat note is the advanced jazz section featuring the 10 seniors with their guys as props.
