Washington County fifth-grader asks friends for gifts for shelter instead of her

May 18, 2008

On April 22, Skye Sanderson, a fifth-grader at Greenbrier Elementary School, presented the Humane Society of Washington County with a generous donation of dog treats and toys. The donation was made in lieu of her receiving gifts for her 11th birthday.

When planning her birthday party, Skye and her mother decided that instead of having her friends give her gifts for herself she would prefer to receive pet- related items that could be donated to animals in need in Washington County.

At her request, friends who attended her party at the Starland Roller Skating Rink in Hagerstown brought dog- and cat-related items.

Skye ended up receiving so many items that she was able to distribute them to two locations. "We decided that we wanted to help out as many animals as possible so we brought all the dog items to the Humane Society and donated the cat items to a cat rescue."

"This was a very nice thing for Skye to do for the animals," said Paul Miller, executive director of the animal shelter.

The shelter has a wish list of items on its Web site at www.hswcmd.org.
