Sharpsburg Elementary students win essay contest

Ava Gift, Americanism chairperson of the Sharpsburg American Legion Auxiliary Unit 236, presented monetary awards and ribbons to the winners of the annual Americanism essay writing contest April 4 at Sharpsburg Elementary School.

The title of this year's essay was "America - Home of the Brave, Land That I Love."

Gift presented $25 to Abby Dickens, daughter of Ron and Angie Dickens, for her first-place essay.

Megan Eichelberger, received $15 for her second- place essay. Megan is the daughter of J.W. and Cheryl Eichelberger.

Dakota Barnhart, daughter of Tom and Tony Barnhart, received $10 for winning third place.

Gift said the judges had a difficult time judging the essays because they were all so well written.

Each participant received a $1 gold coin as a token of appreciation.

Principal Carl Stark accepted from the Legion Auxiliary a $25 check for the school library, along with a $50 check to be used in an emergency fund for students who might not be able to afford to attend school field trips.
