Goretti 7, Bishop Walsh 3

J.J. O'Neill pitched a complete game and had two hits and two RBIs as St. Maria Goretti won its first game of the double-elimination Maryland private-school playoffs.

David Bowen and Connor Grimsley each two hits and Will Murray had two RBIs for the Gaels.

Connor O'Rourke had two hits for Bishop Walsh, which is 1-1 in the tournament.

Goretti (13-8) hosts The Avalon School today at 2 p.m.

Mercersburg 9, Musselman 4

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A.J. Firestone went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs as Mercersburg Academy came back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Musselman.

Collin Stevens also had three hits for Mercersburg, while McArthur Gill had two hits and winning pitcher Tom Timoney threw a complete game with eight strikeouts.


Ethan French had two hits and two RBIs for Musselman (15-14).


Barbour wins 2 District 3 titles

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Chambersburg junior Anyssa Barbour won the girls 100 (12.41) and 200 (25.60) and placed sixth in the 400 (58.78) in the final day of the PIAA District 3 Class AAA championships.

For the Chambersburg boys, Armond Perez placed third in the javelin (181-0), Kavon Bailey was sixth in the triple jump (44-3 1/2) and David Eubanks was sixth in the 1,600 (4:30.28).

Waynesboro's Tyler Swope finished fifth in the boys 100 (11.46).

Chambersburg finished eighth in the girls team standings, while the Chambersburg and Waynesboro boys tied for 12th.

The top five in each event advanced to next week's state meet.


CVCS 2, Broadfording 0

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Kayla Kipe and Taylor Smith each scored an unassisted goal in the first half as Cumberland Valley Christian School (14-2-1) defeated Broadfording Christian Academy in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference championship game Friday at Wilson College.
