County girls help club to state title

Three Washington County girls competing with the Frederick Gymnastics Club helped the team win the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Level 7 State Championship on April 27 at the ACPR Gymnastic Center in Churchville, Md.

It was the second straight year the club has won the event.

Brittani Jobe of Hagerstown, a fourth-grader at Maugansville Elementary, won gold on the vault with a 9.45, scored a 9.30 on bars, 9.05 on beam, and a 9.375 on floor. She placed second in the all-around standings with a 37.175.

Carly Galpin of Brownsville, a fifth-grader at Pleasant Valley Elementary, scored 9.075 on vault, placed second on beam with a 9.35 and floor with a 9.025. Her combined score of 35.5 placed her ninth in the all-around standings.

Mary Teunis of Hagerstown, a fifth-grader at Eastern Elementary, had a solid year and qualified but was unable to compete due to an injury.

The team is coached by Cory Niswander and Mary Hawley.
