Skateboarding event

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -A skateboarding free-for-all will be held on Saturday, May 31, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Memorial Park Skate Park.

The event is open to kids and parents who want to challenge their physical aptitude, balance and agility.

Skateboards will be available to try. Experienced skaters will assist and give demonstrations. Participants must bring a helmet. Kneepads and elbow pads are recommended.

Gardening workshops

The Regional Resource Connection - Morgan County Starting Points, WVU Extension, The Salvation Army, MCEIC and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, are offering a series of free workshops for those interested in growing their own vegetables for their families.

The first workshop, Container Gardening, will be held on Thursday, May 29, at Morgan County Starting Points, 292 N. Washington St. A free dinner will be served from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Class begins at 6 p.m. Child care will be provided.

The workshop will teach participants how to plant and care for vegetables in containers. They will then go outside to plant a vegetable seedling. Each person will go home with at least one free vegetable plant.

Kids Alive Fest

Children's Village of Washington County Inc. will host its 17th annual Kids Alive Fest, open house and community safety day on Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Children's Village campus, 1546 Mount Aetna Road in Hagerstown. Admission is free. Events will be held rain or shine.

Two area youngsters will be inducted into the Children's Village Life Safety Hall of Fame at a ceremony at 11:45 a.m.

The day's other activities will include: K-9 demonstrations by Maryland Correctional Institution at 12:30 p.m.; an auto extrication demo by Maugansville Fire Department at 1:15 p.m.; Ronald McDonald safety show at 2 p.m.; car seat safety checks throughout the day at Brethren Mutual Insurance parking lot; and child IDs by Gaye McGovern Insurance Agency, State Farm Insurance.

Weather-permitting activities include mini-car rides, radar gun contest, and fire hose spraying challenge. Families will have the opportunity to complete safety stations throughout the day.
