Tri-State supermarkets distribute $38,000 to schools

May 16, 2008

Shoppers in Tri-State-area Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets contributed $38,000 to 16 local schools through this year's A+ School Rewards program.

Receiving checks Friday afternoon at Martin's on Wesel Boulevard were representatives from Eastern, Fountaindale, Funkstown, Greenbrier, Lincolnshire, Maugansville, Pangborn, Paramount and Williamsport elementary schools, Boonsboro Middle School, North Hagerstown High School, Grace Academy, Heritage Academy and St. Mary School.

Greencastle-Antrim Elementary School in Franklin County, Pa., and Marlowe Elementary School in Berkeley County, W.Va., also received checks.

In the Tri-State-area, the money will allow local schools to earn cash for computers, sports equipment, technology or any other educational needs.

The supermarket chain donated more than $1.5 million to more than 1,400 local public, private and parochial schools in participating areas.

The schools, which must be registered, accrued funds every time customers used their BonusCard between Oct. 7 and March 15.

Tracy Pawelski, spokeswoman for Giant and Martin's, said the amount each school receives depends on how many shoppers designated that school for donations.

Giant and Martin's stores have information available about A+ School Rewards and how shoppers may sign up during the school year.
