UPDATE: Police probe death of Chambersburg man

May 16, 2008|By DON AINES

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Chambersburg Police Department and Franklin County Coroner's Office are investigating the death of a borough man whose body was discovered Friday on the bank of Conococheague Creek.

Jeffrey Lynn Smith, 35, of 523 Center St., was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:28 p.m. by Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner. His body was found on the east bank of the Conococheague below the south end of the Rail Trail trestle between Lincoln Way West and Queen Street, Conner said.

Smith apparently abandoned a car in the Shopper's parking lot along Black Avenue shortly before 11 a.m., police said. Fresh damage to the vehicle's front end indicated it was involved in an earlier hit-and-run crash at an unknown location, police said.

Smith might have jumped or fallen into the creek from the bank near the north end of the trestle, then pulled himself onto the creek bank, police said.

Foul play is not suspected in Smith's death, police said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, Pa., Conner said in a press release. A conclusion as to the cause and manner of death could take between eight and 10 weeks pending the outcome of toxicology tests, he said.

Anyone with information about the incident and Smith's whereabouts in the hours leading up to the discovery of his body may call the Chambersburg Police Department at 717-264-4131.
