ELDERSBURG, Md. -- Nick Hallis had three hits, including a home run, and Liberty scored seven times in the first two innings to beat North Hagerstown 12-2 in the Maryland Class 2A West semifinals on Thursday.

Jake Steich, Colby Fisher, and Greg Lynn had the only hits for the Hubs (6-15). Steich and Lynn each drove in a run.

Liberty will face the winner of today's Century-South Hagerstown game in the region final on Saturday.

Mountain Ridge 9, Smithsburg 4

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Smithsburg scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead, but the Leopards could not hold on in the Class 1A West semifinal.

Phil Shriver and Taylor Metzger each had two hits for Smithsburg (7-14).

Chambersburg 5, Shippensburg 3

DILLSBURG, Pa. -- Jim Byers hit the go-ahead two-run single during a sixth-inning rally as Chambersburg inched past Shippensburg for the Mid-Penn Conference title.


Byers hit an RBI double for the first Trojans run in the fifth inning, and his hit in the sixth was the fourth straight by a Chambersburg batter. Zach Helm added a run-scoring single during the four-run rally.

Trevor Appleby (6-1) scattered six hits, struck out eight and walked none in the complete-game win.

The Trojans (15-7) return to action Monday against Central Dauphin at Shippensburg in the first round of the District 3 Class AAAA playoffs.

Shalom 11, Heritage 2

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Derek Keener threw a complete-game two-hitter and struck out 15 to lead Shalom Christian past Heritage Academy in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference championship game.

Jay Henicle, Matt Horner, Joel VanKampen, Tyler Strite and Hunter Rock each had two hits for Shalom.

Hyndman 14, Southern Fulton 4

HYMDMAN, Pa. -- Josh Hall had two hits for Southern Fulton (9-9) in its loss to Hyndman.


Hyndman 6, Southern Fulton 4

HYNDMAN, Pa. -- Brooke Whiteside had two hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in two runs for Southern Fulton (13-6) in its loss to Hyndman.

Northern Bedford 3, McConnellsburg 2

LOYSBURG, Pa. -- McConnellsburg's Megan Eichelberger doubled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning, but Northern Bedford scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to beat the Spartans.

Eichelberger went 3-for-4 and Ashley Peck had two hits for McConnellsburg (11-8).


Maryland 2A West championships

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- North Hagerstown's Whitney Garvin placed third in the girls triple jump at 33 feet, 5 inches in the first day of action at the Maryland Class 2A West regional championships.

The South Hagerstown girls placed third in the 4x200-meter relay in 1:52.52, while North Hagerstown was fourth at 1:54.58.

Also for the North girls, Beth Wagner (4-11) and Kelly Tinlin (4-9) were fourth and sixth in the high jump, and the Hubs' 4x800 relay finished fifth (10:20.09).

South's Lexi Turano placed sixth in the girls 3,200 (12:49.48).

Kyle Toms placed fourth in the shot put (44-9) for the South boys, who also were fourth in the 4x200 (1:31.78).

The meet concludes Saturday at Winters Mill High School.

Pa. Independent Schools meet

POTTSTOWN, Pa. -- Lena Finucane won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 20.94 seconds and Deborah Abjibaba won the 800 in 2:25.27 as Mercersburg Academy's girls finished fourth overall in the Pennsylvania Independent School Invitational.

Paige Summers was second in the discus (93-2), the 4x400 relay team finished second (4:09.2), Whitney Matthew was third in the 300 hurdles (26.72), Mackenzie Riford was third in the 3,200 (12:11.46) and the 4x800 team finished third (10:40.28).

The Mercersburg boys finished seventh overall. James Finucane won the 1,600 (4:22.80), Fleet White won the 300 hurdles (40.14) and the 4x400 relay team finished first (3:27.96). White was third in the 100 (11.53).


Broadfording 3, Heritage 2

Hannah Young scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to lift Broadfording Christian over Heritage Academy in the MDCC Tournament semifinals.

Amber Grimm scored two goals for Broadfording, which will play Cumberland Valley Christian in the championship game today.

Morgan McIntire and Becca Clark scored for Heritage.

CVCS 2, Shalom 0

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Kim Sensenderfer scored two goals and Kristin Martin had an assist to lead Cumberland Valley Christian over Shalom Christian in the MDCC semifinals.
