Police Appreciation Day planned at mall

Visit Valley Mall on Saturday and get a chance to help the Maryland State Police, Washington County Sheriff's Department, Hagerstown and Smithsburg police departments and the Maryland Department of Corrections celebrate Police Week.

Various law enforcement vehicles and equipment will be on display throughout the mall as well as representative from area detachments.

Visit the mall's center court at 5 p.m. on Saturday for a special memorial tribute to honor fallen Smithsburg police officer Christopher Nicholson and fallen correctional officer Jeffrey Wroten. This service will be highlighted with an honor guard.

National Pike Festival to stop at City Park

The National Pike Festival wagon train will make a stop at the Jonathan Hager House and Museum on Saturday. Visit the wagon train beginning at 2 p.m. to see the way our ancestors traveled and moved into this area. Admission is free. For more details, go to


Annual Halfway Park Days scheduled

Gather the family and head out to Martin (Marty) L. Snook Memorial Park in Halfway on Saturday, May 24.

Approximately 100 arts, crafts and food vendors will be on hand. Live entertainment is also planned. Admission is free. The park days will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 301-739-3219.

Local AARP chapter to host picnic

The Local Chapter 623 of AARP will be hosting its annual picnic on Tuesday, June 10, at noon at Next Dimensions restaurant on Old National Pike.

Bingo will played following the noontime meal. Each attending member is asked to bring at least one bingo prize. The prize should be of a $1 value and wrapped. Tickets cost $13 and can be purchased by calling Carrie Powell at 301-824-6120. Tickets will only be available until June 4. This is an indoor event, and will be held rain or shine.


Parents of Washington County prekindergarten students, be sure to note the following: On Friday, there will be no prekindergarten classes. Parents of Washington County students should also note that schools will be closed on Monday, May 26, in observation of the Memorial Day holiday.
