Mail Call

May 14, 2008

"Friday's Our View editorial about Del. Chris Shank's antagonistic attitude was right on the money. Our delegation needs to follow Sen. Munson's lead and concentrate on bringing state funds back to Washington County, not picking fights with the Democratic majority. Del. Shank's grandstanding is a liability to Washington County, and he needs to go." - Williamsport

"I was very surprised when I attended the City of Hagerstown meeting on the 2008 budget that included raising the water and sewer rates along with property taxes. Attending the meeting was only five people opposed to this. I read Mail Call all the time and see all the whining and complaining, so where were you at this meeting? Isn't it time we stand up together and speak out and let them know we are in this together? Acting together we can make the difference."

"Ian C. Blair's thought-provoking letter in Saturday's newspaper will have very little, if any, impact on the vast majority of Americans who prefer to remain willfully ignorant about the real world we all live in. But he should get a 'Thumbs up' for trying." - Rohrersville

"Whatever happened to Little League baseball being fun for the kids? My son's played baseball for the last seven years. This is the first year to play for a Little League in Hagerstown. They've played eight games. They've lost all eight games. My son's only got to bat four of them. He maybe gets half an inning out in the outfield. We asked the coach the other night why our son doesn't get to play. He said because he's 9 years old. We said no, he's 11. He got all defensive and told us that he'd play when he wants him to play. I believe that all children - 9-, 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds that play for the Little League - should get to play the same amount of time. The coach, whenever they start to lose again, he gives up, he doesn't encourage the children. He just stands there and hangs his head down. This is why I believe that Little League is not as popular as it once used to be. If the coaches don't care, why should the kids?"

"Everybody is complaining about the price of gas going up, but nobody has said anything about the beer prices in bars that have gone double. When you pass bars, they are packed, but I don't hear anybody complaining about that." - Boonsboro

"I attended that meeting Thursday night, about turning Mills Park into a dog run, and I must say if that woman who got up and said that she could cover the $45,000 cost in constructing the dog run by going to sponsors could actually do as she said, then why doesn't she just go forward and do the whole project privately? Raise the money from sponsors to buy the land and construct the thing the way she and the rest of that ... why come to the city for tax dollars if she can raise private dollars herself? And the group can go do what it wants to do without bothering the rest of us and taking parks away from us." - Hagerstown

"I see in Friday's paper, troopers are gonna get new handguns. I don't know what's the matter with the handguns they have. They don't use them that much, so they ought to be good. I've got a rifle that's been in my house for 40 years and still shoots good. But if they want new handguns, that's OK, as long as my taxpayer's money isn't paying for them. So I don't see why they need new handguns in the first place. I think people ought to check in on that. As a taxpayer, it's your duty." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling in reference to the Myanmar cyclone deaths topping more than 100,000, which is absolutely a horrible, tragic thing that's happened, but I guarantee you we will sending millions and millions of dollars over there for relief, when we have Mississippi and Louisiana that had Hurricane Katrina and still have people not even living indoors, and (if not for) Oprah and people like that, Ellen and them, there wouldn't be anything done down there. I think it's terrible this tragedy happened, but we need (to) start and take care of American people." - Smithsburg

"Here's another prime example of wasting the taxpayers' money. It's 7:30 Sunday morning, and there's a helicopter spraying South Mountain, outside of Boonsboro - I assume, for gypsy moths. Problem is, in about three hours, we are supposed to get one to three inches of rain, which will wash all the spray off without affecting the caterpillars." - Boonsboro

"How can people believe someone can predict or control global warming when we cannot predict or control the weather? Now we are told global warming is not going to happen for 10 years, but we must continue to keep paying to prevent it from happening now. Are we paying a sci-fi tax?"
