After being rained out on Monday, the Washington County Tennis Tournament was finally completed on Tuesday at North Hagerstown High School.

The Hubs finished first in the boys team standings with 20 points. Clear Spring came in second with 17.5 points and Smithsburg was third with 17 points.

Clear Spring finished first in the girls team standings with 19.5 points. Boonsboro and North tied for second with 18 points each.

Smithsburg's David Kurz and Clear Spring's Sarah Dice and Amanda Jenkins repeated as county champs. Kurz raised his record to 20-0 by defeating Eric Campbell of North 6-3, 6-3 in the boys singles championship match.

"It was a goal of mine coming into the season to repeat as boys singles champion in the county," Kurz said. "I guess I was really focusing on playing solid tennis. I wanted to try to hit my balls deep and keep my opponent on the run. He is a very good player and he has very powerful shots. He really pushed me today and it was a close match. I was definitely pleased with my performance today."

Dice and Jenkins, both juniors, repeated as girls doubles champions by beating teammates Jessie Kissner and Brittany Smetzer 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match.

"First of all, we are very athletic and we have been playing tennis since our freshman year," Dice said. "The big thing was that our serves went really well and our ground strokes were really accurate."

"I think it has a lot to do with our teamwork," Jenkins said. "We work real well with each other. We transition a lot with each other. We switch positions in the front row and in the back row quite often."

Senior Gretchen Schoeck of North won the girls singles title for the second time in three years after finishing second last year. Schoeck pulled out a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Tinuke Adetunji of South Hagerstown in the title match.

"It is an accomplishment for me, because she is such a good player," Schoeck said. "She is my top competitor. My goal was to try to be consistent."

North's boys doubles team of Charlie Brasher and Allen Sandberg, both juniors, blanked Clear Spring's Cory Shives and Francesco Scotto di Carlo 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

"Just getting warmed up was really the key," Sandberg said. "Once we were warmed up, we were ready to go."

"We just come out here and get ready, both mentally and physically," Brasher said. "We came out and swept them. I don't think that we could have played any better."

The Boonsboro mixed doubles team of Keith Welch and Manon Hostmann also had a perfect championship match, sweeping the Williamsport team of John League and Hailee Growden, 6-0, 6-0.
