Local law enforcement officers were honored Friday night during a ceremony organized by students involved in Hagerstown Community College's criminal justice program. Del. Richard B. Weldon Jr., R-Frederick/Washington was the guest speaker.

Among other officers, members of the Washington County Special Response Team were recognized for their part in taking Douglas Pryor into custody Dec. 19, 2007, Sheriff Douglas Mullendore said Monday.

"They were extremely instrumental in taking Pryor into custody without additional injury or death to other police officers," the sheriff said.

Pryor faces first-degree murder charges in the Dec. 19, 2007, shooting death of Smithsburg Police Officer Christopher Nicholson. He faces the death penalty if convicted of Nicholson's death. Pryor also faces first-degree murder charges in connection with the death of his estranged girlfriend, Alison Munson.
