Sagittarius gives $17,240 to Antietam Healthcare Foundation

May 13, 2008

Sagittarius Salon and Spa presented a check for $17,240 in February to the Antietam Healthcare Foundation.

The money was raised when the salon held a wellness and beauty auction, "Celebrating 35 Years of Beauty," with proceeds benefiting the John R. Marsh Cancer Center.

The money will be used for the cancer center's Patient Resource Navigator program, which is a partnership between the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and Washington County Hospital.

The program was designed to seek out patients who need and want assistance rather than hoping they will find appropriate resources on their own. This could be particularly beneficial to the underserved population, which ACS estimates at about 30 percent of the total cancer patient population.

Marsha Knicley-Masood, owner of Sagittarius Salon and Spa, wanted to create an event that would kick off the salon's anniversary celebration, but also would benefit and raise awareness for the Patient Resource Navigator program.

Knicley-Masood is an avid supporter of cancer programs and has her own nonprofit organization, Life is a Gift, which offers educational seminars on cancer and provides the annual "Day of Beauty" at no cost to breast cancer patients and survivors.

Sagittarius Salon and Spa is in the Galleria in Hagerstown.
