Hagerstown Civil Air Patrol cadets honored at regional conference

May 11, 2008

Fifteen Civil Air Patrol cadets from Hagerstown Composite Squadron acted as part of the Honor Guard for the Dec. 15 wreath laying at Arlington National Cemetery and at the Air Force Memorial.

It was bitter cold and the cadets were freezing. However, they stood straight and proud for more than an hour at each ceremony.

They performed with very little time out of the elements in between ceremonies.

CAP Gen. Amy Courter was so impressed with the cadets she too took off her coat and also braved the elements with her troops. She recommended them for the Commander's Commendation Award for Outstanding Duty Performance. It is a CAP national award and the fourth highest possible to receive in a lifetime. The awards were presented at the Mid-East Regional Conference in Richmond, Va., on Saturday, April 26.

The Hagerstown cadets who received the award were (in ranking order) Patrick Hammond, Thomas Tippet, Jeffrey Remsburg, Paul Rea, Samuel McQuaid, Christopher Pangborn, Ester Rae, Kyle Lahr, Trei Comer, Ben Stevenson, Stephen Spinder, Colby Robinson, Zoey Garcia and Teresa Gray and Logan Kendall.

The award was also presented to the four senior members who accompanied the cadets and one cadet from West Virginia.
