Fleet Reserve Americanism essay contest winners named

The Fleet Reserve Association "Antietam" Branch 142 presented its Americanism Essay Award for first place to Mara Franciscovich, an eigth-grade student at St. John's Regional Catholic School, and Aislinn Sweeney a 12th-grade student at Middletown (Md.) High School for their essays on the topic "Why I Am Proud To Be an American."

The ceremony was April 23 at AMVETS Post 9 in Middletown.

Each received a $200 U.S. savings bond, a framed certificate and a U.S. flag. The flags were obtained from the office of Sixth District U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett.

A certificate that the flags were flown over the U.S. Capitol accompanied them. The winning essays were also judged by the FRA Regional Contest Committee with Mara receiving A U.S. savings bond as a second place prize. A total of 72 students submitted essays and all received a "Certificate of Appreciation."
