SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - A Franklin County man was charged this week by the Child Predator Unit of the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office with having unlawful contact with a minor after allegedly having sexually explicit conversations on a computer chat room with a person he thought was a 12-year-old girl.

Michael Lee McBeth, 35, of 38-B Sand Bank Road in Shippensburg, was arraigned Tuesday before Magisterial District Judge Todd R. Williams and jailed on $100,000 bond.

In addition to unlawful contact with a minor, McBeth also was charged with criminal use of a communications facility.

The affidavit of probable cause stated that a man initiated contact with a special agent with the Child Predator Unit, who pretended to be a 12-year-old girl in an online chat room. The two-hour chat occurred Nov. 30, 2007, during which time the man wrote sexually explicit statements and sent a photo of his genitals, police said.

In December, police received a court order for disclosure of communication records from Yahoo!, which provided police with the McBeth's log-in name. A criminal history check revealed that McBeth had pleaded guilty to corruption of minors in Cumberland County Court in 2007 and was on probation.

The criminal complaint in the 2007 case stated McBeth had inappropriate sexual conversations with five girls ages 10 to 16.

The affidavit indicated that McBeth had used the computer of his girlfriend to contact the special agent on Nov. 30. McBeth was interviewed by police Tuesday and a warrant was issued for his arrest, the affidavit stated.
