Approval of plaque at North Hagerstown's Mike Callas Stadium delayed

May 07, 2008|By ERIN CUNNINGHAM

Approval of a plaque to be placed at Mike Callas Stadium at North Hagerstown High School was postponed Tuesday.

The Washington County Board of Education decided to delay that decision, saying they wanted more time to consider wording that would acknowledge the community's contribution.

Board Member Wayne D. Ridenour was against postponing the vote until May 20. Member Paul W. Bailey was absent.

Brian Williamson, a former student representative on the School Board and a North Hagerstown High School graduate, suggested recognizing the community's contribution to the stadium. The stadium was the result of a public-private partnership and was funded largely with donations.

Assistant Superintendent for School Operations Boyd Michael said officials "neglected to put up" a plaque at the stadium several years ago after it was constructed.
