Tickets going fast for Bonanza Extravaganza at Hagerstown Speedway

HAGERSTOWN -- This weekend's Bonanza Extravaganza at Hagerstown Speedway will feature four live bands, tip jars, games and a 16-lane all-you-can-eat buffet, but organizers say those aren't the reason the $100 tickets are selling so fast.

"I think the biggest draw is the prize list," event chairman Rick Conrad said. "Every time someone looks at this prize list, they look at me and say, 'How can you guys do this?'"

In a series of lottery-style drawings, the International Association of Firefighters Local 1605 Foundation will give away more than $800,000 in prizes, including a $100,000 grand prize, seven new Chevrolet cars and trucks, and eight new Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Conrad said.

The event, in its third year, is an annual fundraiser put on by the IAFF Local 1605 Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization for career firefighters that supports fire safety and education, Conrad said.

In the first two years of the event, the foundation donated more than $200,000 to nonprofits and charities in Washington County, including about $24,000 to volunteer fire companies, he said.

People are often skeptical of the foundation's ability to give away such large prizes, but there is no catch, Conrad said. The prizes are paid for through ticket sales and the vehicle prizes are bought at a discount from event sponsors, he said.

Each of the 10,000 general admission tickets has a four-digit number, from 0000 to 9999, Conrad said. Beginning at noon Saturday, bingo-style drawing machines will randomly select from these numbers, and the matching ticket for each drawing wins the associated prize, he said. Ticketholders do not need to be present to win.

The music is a mix of classic rock, modern rock and blues, he said. The 69 Band and Thique will headline Friday's show, then return to perform again Saturday along with Rhythm Kings and Jester.
