Program for children of divorce

FREDERICK, Md. - Children from Changing Families will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from May 6, through June 10, at Families Plus!, 35 E. Church St.

Children from Changing Families is a free six-week group for children in grades one through eight whose parents are divorced or separated.

Homemakers host day of classes

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -Penn State Cooperative Extension and the Homemakers Groups of Franklin County are sponsoring the Spring Awareness Day program from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at Kauffman Community Center, 7289 Ruritan Road.


Topics for the program include "Colorectal Cancer," presented by Betsy Aumiller, South Central Pennsylvania Cancer Education Network, Department of Public Health Sciences; "Living Green," presented by George Hurd, extension educator, Penn State Cooperative Extension, Franklin County; and "Cooking with Herbs" presented by Madeline Wajda of Willow Pond Farm in Fairfield, Pa.

Lunch will be a baked chicken buffet. There also will be exhibits, crafts and door prizes. Admission costs $11.

Humane Society holds volunteer orientation

The Humane Society of Washington County is holding an orientation for potential volunteers from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7. The event is free and anyone interested in helping at the shelter is encouraged to attend. Especially needed are dog walkers during daylight hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Training will be provided.

Interested individuals between the ages of 12 and 15 must be accompanied by an adult; ages 16 and older may volunteer independently. Natural supports workshop

FREDERICK, Md. - Vroon VanDenBerg, LLP will present a natural supports workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, at Mount St. Mary's University, Frederick Campus, 5350 Spectrum Drive, Suite A, Room 105. Registration deadline is Tuesday, May 13.

A natural support is a family member, friend or community member or organization selected by the participant and/or family to participate in the development of a plan of care.

The participants will review the process and skill sets for identifying and engaging natural supports.

Bicycle safety rodeos

FREDERICK, Md. - Bicycle safety rodeos hosted by Frederick County Sheriff's Office Community Deputies and Frederick County Safe Kids Coalition are scheduled in May. Children and their parents are invited.

The rodeos will be:

Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at Myersville Volunteer Fire Co., rear parking lot behind bank, 301 Main St.

Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at Middletown High School's stadium, 200 Schoolhouse Drive.

Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to noon at Emmitsburg Town Hall, 300 S. Seton Ave.

Deputies will work with children on safe riding techniques.

Family retreat

Authentic Community Theatre Inc. will present "Know Love, Know Power: the Retreat" at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown.

The two-session retreat will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 9; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10. Pizza will be served for Friday's dinner, and sandwiches will be served for Saturday's lunch.

The retreat will explore communication and relationships between children and adults. Adults, teens and preteens are invited to this free event. Registration is required. Go to to register.

Teen childbirth, parenting classes

FREDERICK, Md. - Families Plus! will offer free teen childbirth and parenting classes from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28, at Family Partnership, 8420 Gas House Pike.

The classes are for pregnant teenagers and their partners. The classes are co-sponsored by Family Partnership, Families Plus! and Frederick County Health Department.
