Hagerstown church to host National Day of Prayer vigil

April 30, 2008

This year's National Day of Prayer will be observed Thursday at Washington Square United Methodist Church, 538 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown.

Sponsored by the West Hagerstown United Methodist parish, a prayer vigil will be from 12:01 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday for anyone who wants to spend time in prayer or meditation.

Someone will be at the parking lot entrance to give access during the early-morning hours.

At 5:15 p.m., a family night supper will be held, followed by an old-fashioned prayer meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Those who attend the prayer vigil, which is dedicated to longtime church member the late Jim Poindexter, will receive a lapel sticker that reads "I Prayed."

This prayer vigil is open to anyone, not just to members of the West Hagerstown parish.

Shirley Dobson of Focus on the Family is the national chairwoman. The theme for 2008 is "Prayer! America's Strength and Shield."
