Auction nets $64,000 for Waynesboro's American Cancer Society chapter

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Saturday evening's Gala Auction at the Waynesboro Eagles Club raised approximately $64,000 for the American Cancer Society, according to Jill Kessler, chairwoman of the 27th annual event.

With the extra donations that typically come in after the event, that should mean the 2008 check to the American Cancer Society could be about equal to last year's $67,000, Kessler said.

An 85-square-foot playhouse from GRC Contractors fetched $3,000 during oral bidding.

"That was probably the only actual bidding war we had last night between two people," Kessler said on Sunday.

The 10-foot-high playhouse, which had siding and a shingled roof, was so big that it had to be left on Center Square.

Kessler said that while Saturday's crowd was smaller than in years past, no negative comments were offered about the fundraiser.

"Everybody is so glad to be there, bidding on things," she said.
