Welcome to May on Thursday! The flowers and trees are blooming, and it's so nice to sit outside and enjoy it all.

Aleshire to speak at Thursday meeting

Citizens for Protection of Washington County (CPWC), will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Halfway fire hall's new building.

Washington County Commissioner Kristin Aleshire will be the guest speaker. Aleshire will talk about water, sewer and other related issues about the county, present and future.


The meeting is open to the public.

Bester Boosters plan yard and craft sale

Bester's Boosters will hold their third annual yard and craft sale on Saturday, May 24, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The group is accepting space reservations. Spaces cost $15 or two for $25 and can be reserved by calling 301-733-5328.

A portion of the proceeds will go toward the playground renovation fund.

Mansion House Art Gallery

The Mansion House Art Gallery in Hagerstown's City Park will hold a reception on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. It will feature an art exhibit by Lucy Ecker.

Admission is free.

The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Poppy Day

Saturday is Poppy Day at American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown.

The auxiliary will be selling poppies at the Food Lions on Wilson Boulevard and Virginia Avenue, and at Sam's Club and Kmart, both off Wesel Boulevard, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Please come out and buy a poppy and support Disabled American Veterans and their families.

Lions Club

Tuesday - Program undetermined - the sequel.

This appears to be one of the Hagerstown Lions Club's most popular programs, since it has been scheduled lately on an almost monthly basis.

Dinner reminder

The Hagerstown Lions Club invites you and your guest to the 85th anniversary celebration Saturday, May 10, at the Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion at 405 Northern Ave., Hagerstown.

A social hour will begin at 6 p.m. with a cash bar and festivities. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Dinner will be buffet style with your choice of sliced roast beef au jus, seafood newburg with rice or stuffed chicken breast. Entertainment will be provided by the Rhythm Kings and vocalist Kim Tantillo.

Tickets cost $18 per person. Please reserve tickets by May 2. Money can either be turned in at the weekly meeting or mailed to Lion Robert Brown, P.O. Box 1857, Hagerstown MD 21742-1857.

South High Class of 1978 plans reunion

The South Hagerstown High Class of 1978 reunion will be Aug. 9 at Beaver Creek Country Club.

Neighborhoods 1st Locust Point

There was some discussion about planting trees where there are empty planting areas along the sidewalks.

The Ray Street block party is still in the planning stages. Kendle Insurance is donating a gift basket as a door prize. The group needs volunteers to make this event a success.

The next meeting is May 13 at the Bester Elementary School library at 7 p.m.
